Swift Current arrived in Lethbridge for Wednesday evening to battle the Hurricanes for their fourth and final regular season meeting. Three third period goals by the Hurricanes combined with a 41 save performance from Lethbridge netminder Stuart Skinner doomed the Broncos in a 5-1 loss.
The Hurricanes lit the lamp first as Giorgio Estephan one-timed a tape-to-tape pass from Alec Baer to make it a 1-0 game at the 14:28 mark of the opening frame. The Broncos were outshot 14-5 through 20 minutes and goaltender Jordan Papirny kept his club within striking distance after turning aside 13 Lethbridge shots.
On the Broncos third man advantage of the night, Aleksi Heponiemi entered the opposing zone and went directly to the net before kicking the puck out to an open Conner Chaulk for the tying goal.
Swift Current applied pressure for the majority of the second period, firing 18 shots on goal but Lethbridge’s Skinner was steady with 17 saves.
Ryan Vandervlis scored the Hurricanes second goal after a wraparound attempt from Tanner Nagel deflected to the stick of Vandervlis and he went five-hole on Broncos goaltender Jordan Papirny. The goal came with less than three minutes left in the period and it remained a 2-1 game heading to the third period.
Vandervlis potted his second of the night after backhanding in a rebound off an initial shot from Zane Franklin to extend the Hurricanes lead to 3-1. The Broncos continued to apply pressure, increasing their shot total to 42 but only got one through as they skated to a 5-1 loss.
Shots on goal were 42-38 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos finished the night 1/3 on the power play and held Lethbridge scoreless on their two power play opportunities.
Next up for the Broncos is a date with the East Division leading Regina Pats on home ice at the Credit Union i-Plex on Saturday, January 21st. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
