Penalty Shot Sinks Cougars In Nanaimo

NANAIMO, B.C. – Chad Bell scored the game winner on a penalty shot to lead the Nanaimo Buccaneers past the Victoria Cougars 3-2 on Thursday night.

After getting hooked by Tyler Vanuden on the way to the net, Bell scored 40 seconds into double overtime by wiring the puck off the crossbar and in for his second goal of the game.

Nanaimo scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit.

The win was the Buccaneers fifth in a row despite not having Jacob Carr, Trey Watson, and the always dangerous Trent Bell in the lineup.

Vanuden opened the scoring at 10:08 of the first period when his wrist shot from the slot sailed over the catching glove of John Hawthorne.

Victoria doubled its lead on a goal from Jordan Passmore at 17:40 of the second period.  Standing at the top of the crease, Passmore tipped a Shane Kime point shot over Hawthorne for his tenth goal of the season.

Both goals came on the power play.

15 seconds into the third period, C. Bell went backhand to forehand to beat Anthony Ciurro.

Watching the proceedings from the sin bin was Vanuden who was penalized for slashing late in the middle frame.

Nanaimo went 1-for-6 with the man advantage while the Cougars finished 2-for-4.

Dawson Heathcote, who was recently named VIJHL Player of the Week, picked the top corner of the net from the right faceoff dot at 7:31 to tie the game.

Shots on goal favoured the Buccaneers 35-25.

Billy Walters had two assists in the win.

Next game for Victoria is Saturday, January 21 versus the Oceanside Generals.  Game time at Oceanside Place, located at 830 Island Highway West, is 7:30 p.m.
