Kamloops, BC—It’s back to work for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in Canada West men’s basketball regular season play.
The WolfPack (7-7) will head to Abbotsford, BC to meet up with the University of Fraser Valley Cascades (6-8) on Friday and Saturday (Jan 27-28).
The WolfPack are coming off a bye week while Fraser Valley split with Alberta. They won the first night 73-71 but lost the second 95-78.
“It came at a pretty good time,” said WolfPack head coach Scott Clark about the bye week coming with four weeks left in the regular season. “A number of guys were banged up or had the flu. You use the bye week to get your guys right at the same time as maintaining some timing and sharpness. Hopefully, we have been able to do that.”
There are three weeks left in the regular season, which begs to ask the question “Are the WolfPack where Coach Clark wants them to be at this point of the year?”
“We are a young group of guys. We try every day going to practice and games trying to improve. Even if you have a veteran group it is always hard to answer if they are where you want them to be at this time of year. You are trying to get your players the urgency of the situation but at the same time bring them along in terms of them understanding the length of the season and what it takes to be a university athlete. Are we where we want to be? We are where we are and we are trying to progress.”
When he looks at the Cascades this weekend, Clark says: “They are good. They had a close game with Calgary and they are top three in the country. They beat Alberta and they are top 10 in the country. Obviously they are playing good basketball. They have an older group of guys. Their guard plays well.”
There is only one player in this weekend series who is among the leaders in Canada West stats. Volodymyr Iegorov (5th year, forward, Donetsk, Ukraine) of the WolfPack is fourth in rebounds per game with nine.
Both games this weekend will be webcast on a pay per view basis on www.Canadawest.tv.
After the weekend, the WolfPack return home to face the University of Calgary Dinos on the Warner Rentals court at the Tournament Capital Centre on February 3-4th. February 3rd is “Donor Appreciation and Recognition night”. The weekend is also “80’s, 90’s and Wow Weekend” sponsored by 97.5TheRiver.
