Tale of the Weekend
VICTORIA – Sitting atop the standings of the inaugural Canada West Rugby Sevens Series, the UVic Vikes women’s rugby team will look to keep things that way when they take part in the second ever tournament this weekend in Vancouver.
Beginning with a 9:50 am game on February 4 and wrapping up the round robin portion of the tournament at 12:40 pm on February 5, the Vikes will play a grueling schedule of six games in two days.
“We will bring 14 athletes to this tournament, including 3 new additions from last tournament,” said Vikes head coach Brittany Waters. “We want to give some younger players a chance to put their hands up and give them some experience, but we will still have a core of experienced players leading the team.”
The opening day of the tournament will be crucial to the Vikes success as they take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Alberta Pandas and Calgary Dinos all in a row. Those teams occupy fourth, third and second in the standings respectively.
Last Time Out
The first tournament, out of three, could not have gone any better for the Vikes, as they went a perfect 6-0 on the weekend. The team was able to score back-to-back victories over their rivals from the University of Calgary in the final round robin game and then the championship match.
By the Numbers
10: As the winner of the tournament in Edmonton the Vikes received the maximum ten points to lead the overall series standings.
81: With 139 points for and just 58 against in the opening tournament, the Vikes have outscored their opponents by 81 points in six games.
Brittany Waters, Vikes head coach
“We want to be confident with our abilities and skills going in to the tournament but it’s important in 7s to take each tournament and game as it comes. We know that we will have to work hard in each game and continue to improve if we want to continue being successful.”
