WHL Announces Monthly Award Winners



The Western Hockey League announced today that Seattle Thunderbirds goaltender Rylan Toth has been named the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for January 2017.

Toth, a 20-year-old product of Saskatoon, SK, maintained a record of 10-1-0-0 during the month of January, with a stellar 2.05 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. On two occasions, Toth was called upon to make 35 saves or more, including 38 stops on Friday, January 6, in a 4-3 shootout win versus Everett and another 35 saves on Tuesday, January 24, in a 3-2 overtime win at Spokane.

In 11 appearances during the month of January, Toth surrendered two goals or fewer on six occasions, earning third star honours twice.
Taking to the blue paint for 11 of his team’s 12 contests in the month of January, Toth was named WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 22, 2017, after going 2-1-0-0 with a 1.01 GAA and .944 SV%.

The 6-foot-2, 201-pound goaltender ranks among WHL goaltending leaders in GAA (fourth) and wins (fourth). In his third WHL season and first with the Thunderbirds, Toth is 25-15-1-0 with a 2.63 GAA, .905 SV% and one shutout.

Listed by the Red Deer Rebels, Toth has accumulated a record of 79-49-5-6 with a 2.73 GAA, .907 SV% and seven shutouts in 141 career WHL regular season appearances


The Western Hockey League announced today that Calgary Hitmen forward Matteo Gennaro has been named the WHL Player of the Month for January 2017.

Gennaro, a 19-year-old product of St. Albert, AB, registered 29 points (20G-9A) in 15 games to help the Calgary Hitmen go 4-5-5-1 during the month of January.

In January, the veteran forward put forth 11 multipoint performances, including six multi-goal efforts. Gennaro tallied four points (2G-2A) on Monday, January 2, in a 5-4 shootout loss versus Vancouver. On Sunday, January 15, he scored a hat trick in a 6-5 overtime win versus Lethbridge. With another hat trick on Wednesday, January 18, in a 4-1 win versus Red Deer, Gennaro managed back-to-back three-goal outings. He logged another three-point night with three assists on Friday, January 27, in a 6-5 overtime loss versus Regina. Gennaro recorded points in all but two of the Hitmen’s 15 games during the month of January.

Averaging 1.93 points per game and 1.33 goals per game during the month of January, Gennaro earned first star honours four times and second star recognition once.

The 6-foot-2, 196-pound centre leads the Hitmen in scoring with 58 points (31G-27A) in 46 contests this season.

Gennaro, a seventh round pick (203rd) of the Winnipeg Jets at the 2015 NHL Draft, has collected 147 points (70G-77A) in 248 career WHL regular season contests, split between the Calgary Hitmen and Prince Albert Raiders.

Gennaro is in his first full campaign in Calgary after being acquired from Raiders at the WHL Trade Deadline in January 2016. He was originally a second round pick (41st) of the Prince Albert Raiders at the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
