The Swift Current Broncos put together a complete performance against the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday night, conquering the visitors by a score of 4-1 to snap a four-game losing streak.
Edmonton would strike first on the power play as Brett Kemp scored to put the Oil Kings in front 1-0. Shots on goal were 12-6 in the frame but the boys in green and yellow trailed 1-0 after one period of play.
Puck luck was on the Broncos side to start the second period as Kaden Elder’s pass from the side of the Oil Kings net bounced off a defender and through the legs of goaltender Patrick Dea for his 10th of the season.
Then it was Tyler Steenbergen putting the Broncos ahead 2-1 with his 36th of the year on a Swift Current man advantage. Ottawa Senators prospect Max Lajoie made a nice one-touch pass to Steenbergen who directed it through the five-hole of Dea.
Broncos forward Arthur Miller and Oil Kings defenceman Conner McDonald dropped the gloves with a minute to go in the period and traded several punches in an emotional tussle, resulting in five minute majors for both players.
Before the period drew to a close, Steenbergen was at it again as he scored his second of the night and 37th of the season with 22 seconds remaining in the middle frame to extend the Broncos lead 3-1.
The Oil Kings pushed in the third period with 12 shots on goal but Broncos goaltender Jordan Papirny was solid as he turned aside all 12 shots and finished the night with 23 saves. Aleksi Heponiemi tacked on an empty netter late to seal the 4-1 victory.
Shots on goal were 42-24 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos power play went 1/6 on the night while Edmonton finished 1/4.
Swift Current close out a three-game home stand on Saturday night when former Broncos Kade Jensen, Travis Child and the Brandon Wheat Kings visit the Credit Union i-Plex on Saturday, February 4th at 7:00pm CT.
