As Head Coach Manny Viveiros stated on Saturday morning, ‘this game against Brandon is our biggest game so far,” and the Swift Current Broncos delivered with a terrific 4-1 victory against the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Credit Union i-Plex.

In his second game back since being called up from the SJHL, 19-year-old forward Brandan Arnold scored a gritty opening goal 6:17 into the first period, sending the crowd into an uproar of cheers as Swift Current led 1-0.

Tyler Steenbergen joined in on the fun as he netted his 38th goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0. The Broncos held a 10-9 edge in shots on goal heading into period number two.

From the bench area, Lindgren completed a perfect tape-to-tape pass to a streaking Steenbergen who landed himself a breakaway chance. The native of Sylvan Lake, AB went five-hole on Wheat Kings goaltender Logan Thompson and that saw the Bronco lead grow to 3-0.

Brandon then got on the board 1:44 into the third period as Tyler Coulter netted his 23rd of the season to cut the Broncos lead down to 3-1 but Swift Current made sure their East Division rivals got no closer. Arizona Coyotes prospect Lane Pederson completed a sweeping move to the net and pocketed his 19th of the season to restore the Broncos three-goal lead.

Former Wheat Kings goaltender Jordan Papirny was solid in the Bronco cage, turning aside 28 shots to pick up his second straight victory and first against his former club.

“Yeah, it’s pretty special. I’ve never done that before,” said Papirny when referring to beating his former team. “Everything settled in once the game got going. We got two quick goals, the penalty kill was unbelievable and it was a good win. Those two points were huge, especially getting it from them and it was exactly what we needed.”

Shots on goal were 29-27 in favour of Brandon. Both teams were scoreless on one power play chance apiece.

The Broncos now turn their attention to the road where they will get set for a three-game swing in Alberta, beginning with the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday, February 8th at Rogers Place.
