SAANICH, B.C. – The Victoria Cougars downed the Saanich Braves 5-3 on Friday night.
Nick Gomerich, Dom Kolbeins, Akila Sato-Gaudreau, Grayden Hohl, and Kenny Britton scored for Victoria who ran its winning streak to seven games.
The win moves the Cougars five points ahead of the Campbell River Storm for first place overall in the VIJHL standings.
Campbell River has three games in hand, however.
Scoring for the Braves were Nick Guerra, Scott Henderson, and Kelowna Rockets prospect Ted Brennan.
Victoria led 1-0 after one period and 4-1 after two.
Guerra, who finished with a goal and an assist, leads the VIJHL in points with 76.
Saanich pressed hard in the third period, outshooting the Cougars 19-8 but Anthony Ciurro withstood the onslaught. The native of Peoria, Arizona ended up with 37 saves.
Riley Mathieson turned aside 26 shots in a losing cause.
Each team scored twice on six power play opportunities.
