Wilder, Zakala and women’s basketball receive honour for January

VICTORIA — The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of January 2017. The council would like to congratulate fifth-year rower Becky Wilder, first-year swimmer Josh Zakala and the Vikes women’s basketball team on being awarded January’s athlete and team of the month awards.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Josh Zakala, Swimming

Josh Zakala was named the Varsity Council’s male athlete of the month for his outstanding performance at the Arena Pro Swim Series Texas Grand Prix. Competing against top competition from around the world, the first-year Vike from Kelowna, B.C. finished fifth in the 400-metre Individual Medley. Zakala also won the B final in the 200-metre Backstroke at the event.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Becky Wilder, Rowing

Becky Wilder captured the title of Varsity Council’s female athlete of the month after going out on top at the 32nd Monster Erg. The fifth-year Vike from Victoria, B.C. made it four in a row by winning the Coxswains Crawl in a time of 1:54.2, over four seconds ahead of second place, in her final Monster Erg competing as a Vike.

TEAM OF THE MONTH
Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team had a January to remember, winning more games during that month than the rest of their regular season schedule combined. The Vikes were able to pick up sweeps of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, UBC Okanagan Heat and Lethbridge Pronghorns as well as split a weekend set with the Trinity Western Spartans. In all, the Vikes won six games in a row to start the month and seven of a possible eight in January.
