Medicine Hat, AB- The Victoria Royals were downed 3-1 by the Canadian Hockey League’s eighth ranked Medicine Hat Tigers in a game that saw Matthew Phillips become the second fastest player in franchise history to register 40 goals.
Royals’ forward Phillips fired in his 40th tally of the season off a cross-crease pass from Jack Walker. With his marker, Phillips, in his 56th game played, became the second fastest player in franchise history to reach the 40-goal mark behind Chilliwack Bruin alumnus Ryan Howse, who did so in 54 contests during the 2010-11 campaign.
The Tigers’ Matt Bradley registered the game-winning marker early in the final period. Medicine Hat’s other markers were scored by Gary Haden in the second period and Steven Owre with an empty-net goal late in regulation.
Victoria netminder Griffen Outhouse stopped 30 out of the 32 shots he faced, whereas Medicine Hat goaltender Michael Bullion turned aside 16 of the 17 pucks fired his way.
Both teams were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. The Royals’ went 0/4=0.0%, while the second ranked Tigers’ powerplay went 0/3=0.0%.
Victoria will visit the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night, which will be televised on WHL on Shaw TV, and the Kootenay ICE on Saturday evening. Puck drop for both games are slated for 6:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
The Royals’ return home on Saturday, February 25th for their sixth annual Pink in the Rink Night against the Vancouver Giants with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. This event is one of the most popular games of the season and fans are encouraged to secure their seats in advance.
