VICTORIA – Currently ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, the UVic Vikes men’s golf team is hoping that a lengthy winter break doesn’t interrupt the momentum they built in the fall when they finally get the chance to get back on the course.
“Despite the off-season break, I’m hoping the men continue to build off their momentum from the strong play in the fall,” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “I’m confident all five players will contribute some good scores at this event.”
The Vikes are back in action at the Arizona Christian University Spring Invitational on February 20 and 21.
Lawren Rowe‘s incredible play in the fall has him currently ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and the third-year Vike will look to stay hot as the team continues to build their resume ahead of the National Championships hosted in Moline, Illinois from May 16-19.
“I have no doubt he will continue his strong play at this event and into the Spring season,” said Clews of Rowe.
About the Event
Both Rowe and Mike Griffin will bring some experience to the ACU Invitational, as they were members of the Vikes team that finished eight overall at the event last year. Rowe was the top Vike at the event last year, finishing 12th, while Griffin had a strong outing to end the tournament in 24th.
Clews expects strong competition throughout the weekend, with six teams ranked in the top 20 in the NAIA scheduled to make the trip to Arizona.
Scouting the Course
It appears as the Vikes will bring some B.C. weather down south to the Moon Valley Golf Course where the tournament will take place, with the forecast calling for rain during their practice session on Sunday.
“I think it’s important we utilize our practice round day on Sunday effectively due to the fact we’ve had a lengthy break since our last event in late October,” said Clews.
Justin Clews, Vikes head coach
“I think if we get a good practice session/round in on Sunday, we will be able to place ourselves amongst the leaders, preparation for this event is key.”
“More importantly, I’d like to see the guys play progressively better throughout this tournament so we can build some momentum into our next event which immediately follows on February 25 in Burbank, California.”
