U SPORTS TOP 10 TUESDAY

200
The Toronto Varsity Blues are all alone on top in U SPORTS women’s volleyball for the first time in school history.

The Varsity Blues completed a four-game road trip with a pair of wins over the weekend – a 3-0 win at Windsor followed by a 3-1 victory at Western – to earn the historic sole possession of the No.1 ranking. Previously, Toronto had claimed a share of No.1 with Alberta on Feb. 3, 2015. The Pandas, who had been ranked first in the last 11 coaches’ polls, fall to No.4 after back-to-back losses to then-ranked No. 4 UBC. Toronto completes their regular season hosting Waterloo and Guelph this weekend.

In other U SPORTS rankings, Carleton (men’s basketball), Laval (women’s basketball), UNB (men’s hockey), UBC (women’s hockey; men’s and women’s swimming), Manitoba (men’s volleyball), Guelph (men’s track and field), Toronto (women’s track and field) and Brock (men’s and women’s wrestling) all hold on to their pole positions for another week.

Notes: Top 10 rankings conclude this week in swimming and wrestling. The final rankings for men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s hockey will be next Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The U SPORTS #CHAMPSZN gets under way this week with swimming at the University of Sherbrooke (Feb. 24-26) and wrestling at the University of Winnipeg (Feb. 24-25). Following a one-week break, the action resumes with track and field (March 9-11 at the University of Alberta), women’s basketball (Mar. 9-12 and the University of Victoria) and men’s basketball (Mar. 9-12, in Halifax, N.S., hosted by Dalhousie University). The week after, men’s volleyball (Mar. 17-19 at the University of Alberta), women’s volleyball (Mar. 17-19 at Ryerson University), women’s hockey (Mar. 16-19 in Napanee, Ont., hosted by Queen’s University) and men’s hockey (Mar. 16-19 at the University of New Brunswick) will crown their U SPORTS champions. Sportsnet U will broadcast the semifinals and finals of the men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s hockey championships.

#CHAMPSZN concludes with curling at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay, Ont., hosted by Lakehead University from March 19-22.
