PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle fell to 2-1 overall in Cactus League play with a 14-3 loss vs. the Kansas City Royals in a seven-inning rain-shortened game on Monday afternoon at Peoria Stadium. Mariners scored 3 runs over the first two innings, but could not overcome an early deficit.
Shortstop Jean Segura went 3-for-3 with 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 home run and 3 RBI in the loss. Segura had a RBI double in the first innings scoring left fielder Jarrod Dyson from first base. He followed it up hitting his first home run of the season with a solo shot to left center field on an 0-1 count in the second inning and concluded his day with a RBI single in the 4th inning.
Segura led the team with 3 hits, while Dyson, left fielder Ben Gamel, first baseman Danny Valencia, right fielder Mitch Haniger, catcher Steven Baron and designated-hitter Tyler Marlette each recorded 1 of the Mariners 9 hits.
Right-hander Yovani Gallardo, making his first start of the spring, recorded the loss allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in the first inning. Right-handed reliever Nick Vincent (1 R/1 ER) and left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski (6 R/5 ER) combined to allow 7 runs (6 ER) over the second and third innings. Reliever Jonathan Aro, Dan Altavilla combined to toss a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, while Rob Whalen tossed a scoreless sixth inning before allowing 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Overall the pitching staff allowed 14 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2 over 7.0 innings.
The Mariners (2-1) face the Chicago White Sox as the team returns to Cactus League play tomorrow (Tuesday, February 28) at 12:05 PT/1:05 MT at Camelback Ranch. The game will be broadcast in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez is scheduled to make his first Cactus League start for the Mariners against White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech.
