The PGA TOUR announced an hour-long special titled “PGA TOUR 2017: Arnold Palmer presented by Mastercard” that will document Palmer and his profound impact on both the PGA TOUR and the world of sports.
Produced by PGA TOUR Entertainment, PGA TOUR 2017: Arnold Palmer presented by Mastercard will celebrate the historic career of perhaps the most popular player in the history of golf. A trailblazer during his career, Palmer finished with 62 PGA TOUR wins and seven major championships. In 1961, he was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Palmer passed away on September 25, 2016 at the age of 87.
The early years of dominance helped to inspire a growing fan base, soon to be known as Arnie’s Army. Over the ensuing five decades, Palmer was rightfully regarded as an icon, premier businessmen and ambassador of the 20th century.
PGA TOUR 2017: Arnold Palmer presented by Mastercard will examine the origins of Palmer’s golf dominance, detailing how his Pennsylvania roots shaped him as a youth and brought about his desire to become the premier player of his time. It will document his greatness during the 1960s, highlighting a span when he captured four Vardon Trophies in seven years and led four straight Ryder Cup teams, including serving as a player/captain in 1963.
A Decade of Dominance: Palmer becomes one of the most dominant players in all of sports during the 1960s with 43 victories, including six major championships.
Arnie’s Army: In 1959, the term Arnie’s Army was first used, and six decades later it continues on. The story will detail the fans that admired, respected and loved Palmer, as well as how the Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation makes a powerful impact on the lives of children.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard: The annual PGA TOUR event continues to grow Palmer’s legacy, both in its excitement on the course as well as its impact in the community through the Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation’s efforts, and most notably the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.
