After the mogul skiers last week, it is now the slopestyle and aerial athletes’ turn to participate in their last FIS World Cup of the season. The former will be in Silvaplana, Switzerland, from March 2 to 4, whereas the latter will end the season in Moscow on March 4.

For the fifth consecutive year, the best slopestyle skiers will face each other at the Corvatsch Snowpark on a unique slopestyle course that gives free rein to athletes’ creativity. This World Cup is the final event of the selection process for the World Championships of Sierra Nevada. “It will be interesting to see our Canadian athletes’ performances this weekend in Switzerland as this competition will be decisive for several of them,” explains David Mirota, VP Sport for Freestyle Canada, who will then announce which skiers will be part of the team for the World Championships.

The most recent competition for the Canadian slopestyle team was the Jamboree in Quebec City where Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, a native of the region, managed to secure the bronze medal. As for the ladies, Kim Lamarre offered the best Canadian performance, finishing in sixth place.

A full team will be present at the World Cup in Silvaplana. Afterwards, a few athletes who were invited to the X Games will head to Oslo.

Final Stage for Aerialists
The aerial athletes of the Canadian team went on to Moscow immediately after the World Cup in Minsk to train for this final stage of the FIS World Cup circuit. Olivier Rochon was the best Canadian among the aerialists in Belarus where he finished in 11th place. “I missed the landing of my full, full, full in the big final. It’s too bad because I had saved my biggest jump for the grand final, the full double full full. I am now focussing on Russia, a place I love and where I wish to finish on a positive note,” said Olivier Rochon. Rochon, Gerrits and Lavallée will then join the moguls skiers in Sierra Nevada where they will compete on March 9–10, 2017.
