The Swift Current Broncos went against the Edmonton Oil Kings for their fourth and final meeting of the season and held on for the 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos were slow out of the gate and surrendered a goal to the Oil Kings’ Davis Murray 1:47 into the first period.

St. Louis Blues prospect Glenn Gawdin responded for Swift Current scoring a dandy midway through the frame as he took a pass from teammate Tyler Steenbergen, skated up the middle and split both defenders before deking goaltender Josh Dechaine for his 24th of the season.

Trey Fix-Wolansky put the Oil Kings back up 2-1 after collecting a turnover from Broncos Max Lajoie and firing one by the glove hand of goaltender Jordan Papirny.

Although the Broncos trailed 2-1 heading to the second period, they stuck with the game plan and continued to apply pressure. 19-year-old forward Lane Pederson intercepted an Oil Kings pass deep in Edmonton territory and wristed one off the crossbar but Kaden Elder was present to clean up the rebound and knot it 2-2.

Then at the 11:28 mark, Conner Chaulk scooped up a rebound from a low Arthur Miller shot and slid it five hole to give Swift Current a 3-2 lead.

The Broncos made use of an early third period power play as Finnish Import Aleksi Heponiemi one-timed in the Broncos fourth goal of the game to build a two-goal cushion. Gawdin and Lajoie collected the assists on the goal.

Graham Millar closed the gap to 4-3 after zooming up the right wing and zipping one five-hole on Papirny from the right faceoff dot with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Swift Current was outshot 13-3 in the third period but hung on to earn their fourth straight win by a final score of 4-3.

Shots on goal were 37-29 in favour of Edmonton. Swift Current went 1/3 on the power play and held the Oil Kings scoreless on both of their man advantages.

Swift Current seeks to complete a perfect road trip on Tuesday, March 7th when they battle the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm CT.
