Kyle Hinchey has earned a spot on the All-Rookie team in Canada West men's volleyball

KELOWNA, BC – In a season when the Heat men set a new team record for wins, outside hitter Kyle Hinchey stood out as the driving force for the program’s future. His play this year earned him conference recognition, as he has been named to the 2016/17 Canada West All-Rookie team.

Hinchey played in all but one of the Heat’s matches this season, only missing the road half of UBC Okanagan’s annual home-and-home series against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

In 23 matches, Kyle’s rookie season saw him amass 174 kills while hitting .147 on 495 attempts. Defensively, he collected 46 total blocks and 119 digs while committing just five defensive errors.

In the final match of the season Hinchey tied his season high for kills, finishing with 15, and had an exceptional .379 hitting percentage. He also set a career high in points, with 17, as the Heat closed out their season with their fourth straight win.

Brad Hudson, also a rookie in his first year as head coach for the UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball was pleased that Kyle earned the spot on the team.

“I am exceptionally proud of Kyle. Kyle showed tremendous growth in all facets of his game and more importantly became an exceptional teammate. I’m excited to see what the future brings for him. When you look at his improvements, Eli Risso setting the dig record, and Devon Cote playing the best volleyball of his young career to finish the season you can’t help but be enthused for the future of this program.”

The future looks strong for Heat men’s volleyball after placing three players on the rookie team the past two seasons. Last year Devon Cote and Eli Risso were on the team. Risso in just his second year in Canada West set a conference record for digs in a single season with 295.
