Kamloops, BC- The Victoria Royals were defeated 5-2 by the Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday evening at the Sandman Centre.


Royals’ forward Matthew Phillips opened the scoring in the first period with his team-leading 47th goal of the year. Ethan Price scored the second goal for the visitors while on a breakaway in the first frame.


Phillips’ marker passed Tyler Soy for the Victoria record for most goals scored in a single season, which was set last year. The franchise mark is held by former Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse who registered 51 goals during the 2010-11 campaign.


The Blazers’ Collin Shirley scored the game winner in the final stanza. Rudolfs Balcers tallied two markers of his own, while Joe Gatenby and Quinn Benjafield recorded the remaining goals.


Royals’ goaltender Griffen Outhouse made his second start in two days and turned aside 45 out of 50 shots. The Blazers countered with Connor Ingram who stopped 27 out of 29 shots.


Victoria was unable to convert on the powerplay and went 0/2=0.0%. Kamloops held a 1/4=25.0% mark on the man-advantage.


The Royals will face the Blazers once again on Friday evening at the Sandman Centre with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. The team will then travel to Kelowna to take on the Rockets on Saturday. Puck drop for that contest is slated for 7:05 p.m.


Victoria will play its final home game of the season and celebrate Fan Appreciation Night on Friday, March 17th against the Everett Silvertips. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
