PEORIA, Ariz. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today from Spring Training that the club has acquired minor league outfielder Joey Curletta from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for switch-handed pitcher Pat Venditte. Curletta will report to Seattle’s minor league camp.


Today’s roster move leaves the Mariners Major League camp at 62 players; 41 roster players and 21 non-roster invitees.


Curletta, who turned 23 on March 8, split last season between high-A Rancho Cucamonga and AA Tulsa in the Dodgers system. He began the season with Rancho Cucamonga and was named California League Player of the Week, July 18-24. He hit safely in 21 of his final 24 games with the Quakes, including a 10-game hit streak, July 15-26. Was promoted to Tulsa on July 28. Had a two-homer game (5 RBI) Aug. 5 at Northwest Arkansas. Was traded by Los Angeles (NL) to Philadelphia on Sept. 15, 2016 as PTBNL in deal that sent Carlos Ruiz to the Dodgers.


Curletta was selected by Los Angeles (NL) in the 6th round of the 2012 June Draft out of Mountain Pointe HS (Phoenix, AZ). He’s hit a combined .261 in five minor league seasons with 99 doubles, 7 triples and 40 home runs in 448 games. He was T7th in the Cal League on doubles in 2015 and was named a Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star in 2014.


Venditte, 31, has posted a 6.00 ERA (2 ER, 3.0 IP) with 5 strikeouts in 3 Cactus League appearances with the Mariners this spring. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound switch-handed pitcher has made two appearance with Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits (1 home run) with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk over 2.2 innings pitched. He went 0-0 with a 5.73 ERA (14 ER, 22.0 IP) with 19 strikeouts in 15 relief appearances with Toronto and Seattle in 2016. With Seattle, he was 0-0 with a 6.08 ERA (9 ER, 13.1 IP) with 12 strikeouts in 7 relief appearances after going 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA (1 ER, 8.1 IP) with 11 strikeouts in 5 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma. He was acquired from Toronto in exchange for a player to be named later on Aug. 6. He posted a 5.19 ERA (5 ER, 8.2 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks in 8 relief appearances with Toronto and in 25 games, including 2 starts, with AAA Buffalo last season, he was 2-1 with a 4.37 ERA (17 ER, 35.0 IP) with 52 strikeouts and 13 walks. Venditte was designated for assignment by the Mariners on November 23, 2016 and outrighted to AAA Tacoma on December 1.
