NAIT to host the 2017 CCAA women’s basketball national championship

March 13, 2017 – NAIT will play host to this year’s Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s basketball national championship March 15-18. The Top 8 CCAA teams from across the country will participate.

The teams competing include the gold medalists from each of the five conferences, two silver medalist wildcard teams, and the host NAIT Ooks.

The RSEQ (Quebec) conference will be represented by les Nomades de Montmorency and the Dawson College Blues. The Holland College Hurricanes and the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics will be attending from the ACAA (Maritimes) conference. The reigning national champion Humber College Hawks return to defend their title,representing the OCAA (Ontario) conference. The Douglas College Royals won the PACWEST (BC) conference and will join the host NAIT Ooks and the ACAC (Alberta) champion Lethbridge College Kodiaks as the final teams vying for this year’s national title.

All games will take place at the NAIT gymnasium. Quarter-finals will be played Thursday, semi-finals Friday, and the Gold and Bronze medal games will be Saturday.

The teams will gather Wednesday evening, March 15 at the Sutton Place Hotel for the CCAA Awards banquet where the All-Canadians, national player and coach of the year awards will be presented. The guest speaker will be former Team Canada’s women’s basketball assistant coach Bev Smith.

NAIT’s athletics manager and tournament co-chair Gregg Meropoulis is excited to get the championships started.

It will be an outstanding demonstration of the exceptional skills of these 120 student-athletes who have worked countless hours in the classroom and on the court to get to this premier tournament.”

Lethbridge (3) vs. Douglas (6), 1 p.m.

Montmorency (2) vs. MSVU (7), 3 p.m.

Humber (1) vs. NAIT (8), 6 p.m.

Holland (4) vs. Dawson (5), 8 p.m.
