Two Fraser Valley teams have claimed the 2017 BC Masters Curling Championship titles.

On the men’s side, Team Watson, playing for Chilliwack Curling Club, emerged from the round robin with a 6-1 record, with their only loss against Team Pughe. A 10-7 win in the 1 vs 2 page playoffs sent them to the final against Team Kent, of Cranbrook, the home crowd favourites. A tense game went into an extra end, with Team Watson scoring a deuce to win 4-2 to take the victory and the gold medal.

Team Watson features two curlers from the 1985 BC team that competed at the Brier, Ken Watson, from Surrey, and Doug Meger, from White Rock. They remain teammates more than 30 years later. The team is rounded out by Dale Hockley and Vic Miller from Chilliwack.

On the women’s side, Team Klebe, also from Chilliwack Curling Club, also lost just one game on the way to their gold medal. They finished the round robin 6-1, with their only loss to Team Clark. A win in the page 1 vs 2 playoffs got them a bye to the final, where they beat Team Noble, skipped by the current senior (50 plus) women’s champion Lynne Noble, 5-4.

The team features Janet Klebe and Kerri Miller of Chilliwack, Jane Adam of Rosedale as well as Laurie Shimizu and coach Vic Shimizu, of Richmond.

Team Watson and Team Klebe will represent BC at nationals from April 2-9, 2017, in Guelph, Ontario. It will be an extra special trip for the Miller family because Vic Miller from Team Watson is married to Kerri Miller from Team Klebe.

Sixteen master curling teams took part in the 2017 Canadian Masters Curling Championships at Cranbrook Curling Club. The event for curlers 60 and over started on Tuesday, March 7, and wrapped up yesterday (Sunday, March 12).

Silver medals were awarded to Lynne Noble’s Qualicum &District Curling Centre rink and Gerald Kent’s Cranbrook Curling Centre rink.

Bronze medals were awarded to Joanne Mick’s Marpole Curling Club rink and Garry Beaudry’s Trail rink.
