Royals Drop Their Fifth Consecutive Game


Langley, BC- The Victoria Royals were downed 5-3 by the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday evening at the Langley Events Centre.


Victoria forward Matthew Phillips recorded his 50th goal of the season, and his second marker of the night, on a penalty shot early in the third period when be beat Giants’ netminder David Tendeck with a shot on the low-blocker side. Phillips’ first tally came in the middle frame. Blake Bargar registered the other marker for the visitors in the final stanza.


Phillips is now one goal away from tying the franchise record for most markers in a season. The franchise mark is held by former Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse who scored 51 times in the 2010-11 campaign.


Vancouver forward James Malm propelled the offence for the home team with four points (2g-2a). Giants forward Ty Ronning scored the game-winning goal in the third period, while Jordan Wharrie and Brayden Watts collected the other markers.


Royals’ defenceman Ryan Gagnon took part in his 318th career WHL game and tied Victoria alumnus Brandon Magee for most games played in franchise history. Gagnon has spent his entire WHL career with the Royals, while Magee split time with Victoria (252) and Chilliwack (66).


Victoria goaltender Griffen Outhouse got the nod in net and turned aside 28 of the 33 shots he faced. Giants’ netminder David Tendeck stopped 39 out of 42 pucks fired his way.


The Royals posted a mark of 0/3=0.0% on the man-advantage, whereas the Giants went 1/3=33.3% on the powerplay.


Victoria will play their final home game of the regular season and celebrate Fan Appreciation Night this Friday against the Everett Silvertips at 7:05 p.m.
