Tale of the Weekend
VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes men’s rugby team will have to battle through some adversity this weekend when they look for their third BC Premier League victory in a row in a game against the UBC Old Boys Ravens on March 18 at Wallace Field.
With the Vikes sending two teams to the University Sevens Championship that take place on the 17 and 18, it will be a mixed line up for the team: with some players being called up from the Norsemen and other guys possibly playing at both the sevens tournament as well as in the Premier League match.
“The pack will be pretty much the same and we will have the national team guys back,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate. “Some guys who have been playing for the Norsemen will get the chance to play for the varsity team, so they’ll be keen.”
The game gets underway at 2:45 p.m. and offers the Vikes a chance to get their record back to .500 as they currently sit at 2-3, good enough for fifth place in the BC Premier League.
The Ravens meanwhile, are just one spot behind the Vikes, in sixth place with a record of 1-2.
Last Time Out
The Vikes were unable to beat the Castaway Wanderers two weeks ago, as they fell 25-20 to their Vancouver Island rivals. That loss marked the fourth time this season that the Vikes have dropped a game to the Wanderers.
The Ravens were also last in action two weeks ago when they came out on top of the James Bay Athletics Association 34-30 in Vancouver.
Doug Tate, Vikes head coach
“This is not a team that should be taken lightly because we are still going to be good.”
