Reactions to the draw

Borussia Dortmund will play AS Monaco in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League as revealed in the draw in Nyon on Friday. Here follows some reaction from BVB:

Hans-Joachim Watzke (CEO):

“Just like Bayern, we wanted to avoid an all-German clash. That came off. Nevertheless, we have a very strong opponent in Monaco. I watched their second-leg against Manchester City, which was very convincing. And Monaco’s goal difference in the French league, plus 58, says a great deal. We are delighted about an attractive draw and are looking forward to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.”

Michael Zorc (sporting director):

„Finally, we have a draw that we have never had before in our European history. And it is very evenly-balanced. We will have to be wide-awake, because Monaco are not top of the French league ahead of Paris St. Germain for nothing. And in Manchester City, they knocked out a very strong rival out of the competition.”

Thomas Tuchel (head coach):

„It is a very exciting, very difficult draw. Monaco knocked out one of the favourites, Manchester City, in two spectacular games. They are a very homogenous team with great individual quality and an outstanding coach. We will need to put in our best performance twice to beat this opponent.”

Marcel Schmelzer (captain):

„It is a very interesting proposition that will demand everything of us. Monaco don’t just have excellent individual players, they play as a determined and committed team as well. We will need to exhibit these qualities in both games to have a chance. But we have proved we can do that in recent years in the Champions League.”
