MARINERS LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO OAKLAND

PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle loaded the bases in the ninth inning to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but were unable to push any runs across in an 8-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics in Cactus League play in front of 8,800 fans at Peoria Stadium.

 

After the first two men in the ninth inning were retired, Seattle loaded the bases on three consecutive walks to Taylor Motter, Luis Liberato and Tuffy Gosewisch before Guillermo Heredia was retired on a groundout to first base to end the game.

 

Leonys Martin went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk and over his last five games, he’s hitting .429 (6×14) with 4 runs, 2 home runs, 2 RBI and 3 walks. Robinson Canó went 2-for-3 with a double, 3 RBI and a walk in his first game since returning from the World Baseball Classic.

 

After falling behind by six, Seattle chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the third, getting a two-out RBI double by Canó that scored Jarrod Dyson from first base. In the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Seager led off with a walk and was followed by a Mitch Haniger single before the next two batters were retired. With two outs in the frame, Leonys Martin walked to load the bases and Dyson drove in a run with an infield single. Jean Segura then followed with a bases loaded walk before the scoring in the inning was capped by a two-run single by Canó.

 

Starter Chris Heston, who entered the game with a 2.89 ERA in four games including three starts, faced the minimum six batters through two innings. In the third inning, he allowed six consecutive hits and seven overall and was touched up for six runs in the frame before being removed with one out in the inning. Minor leaguer Josh Judy struck out two of the three batters he faced to get out of the inning. Dan Altavilla two scoreless frames before Dean Kiekhefer allowed two runs in the sixth inning. Evan Scribner entered in the seventh, tossing a clean inning before getting the first out in the eighth inning. Jonathan Aro tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings of the game for Seattle.

 

The Mariners (15-10) return to Cactus League action tomorrow, hosting the Los Angeles Angels (March 22) at 1:10 pm at Peoria Stadium. The game will be broadcast (delayed) in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network and televised by ROOT SPORTS Northwest. Right-hander Cody Martin (1-0) will make his 6th appearance, 1st start, of the spring for the Mariners against Angels right-hander Yusmeiro Petit.
