Rowe captures individual title, Vikes women battle back for sixth place finish in Nevada

VICTORIA – Lawren Rowe came in first place to produce the top individual result of the tournament as the UVic Vikes golf teams finished in sixth (women’s) and eighth (men’s) at the Battle at Primm, taking place in Primm Valley, Nevada, from March 20-21.

The win was Rowe’s third this season as the third-year athlete from Victoria, B.C., continues to cement his place near the top of the individual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics rankings.

Rowe led the event from beginning to end, shooting two rounds of three-under-par and one spectacular round of five-under-par to finish the tournament with a score of 205, three better than the second place finisher.

Jacob Hayes and Mike Griffin put in solid scores over the weekend: finishing with scores of 222 and 225 to finish in ties for 34th and 46th place. Brandon McManus and Jake Hamilton wrapped up their tournament with scores of 234 and 240 over their three rounds.

The Vikes women continued their strong play in the spring season, putting together an outstanding second day to jump all the way from tenth in the team standings up to sixth. Nicole Gargarella and Rhiannon Jones were the catalysts for the Vikes rise up the standings, moving up 15 and 23 spots in the individual standings respectively.

Gargarella finished the tournament in a tie for 18th with a score of 155. Jones wound up just one stroke behind her teammate and finished in a tie for 22nd.

Laura Ferreira and Hannah Diamond also improved their scores from the first to the second round, finishing in ties for 35th and 47th. Melanie Murchison rounded out the event for the Vikes with a two-day total score of 170.
