Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate forward Matthew Phillips on being named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team for the 2016-17 WHL Season.

This season, Phillips led the Royals in multiple offensive categories that included points (90), goals (50) and game-winning markers (7), while he finished second on the team in assists (40). He was also tied for first, with Dante Hannoun, for the club lead in powerplay scoring as both players tallied 15 goals and 18 assists. Phillips became just the second Royal, behind alumnus Alex Forsberg (91 points in 2015-16), to record 90 points in a single season.

The 5-6, 141 lb forward’s 50 goals were tied for the second most in the WHL behind Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Tyler Wong and Swift Current Broncos’ Tyler Steenbergen who led the league with 51 markers. Phillips is the first Victoria Royals’ player to reach the 50-goal milestone and in doing so set the team record for most tallies scored in a single season.  The second year forward also finished one marker shy of tying former Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse for the franchise record for most goals in a single season with 51. He is the third Royal and fifth player in franchise history to be named to a WHL All-Star Team.

A native of Calgary, AB, Phillips was selected by his hometown Calgary Flames in the sixth round, 166th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

The Royals will kick off the 2017 WHL Playoffs in Everett with Game’s 1 and 2 on Friday, March 24th and Saturday, March 25th respectively. Puck drop for Friday’s contest is at 7:35 p.m., while Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Victoria will then travel back home for Game’s 3 and 4 on Tuesday, March 28th and Wednesday, March 29th, with puck drop at 7:05 p.m. for both contests.
