CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Dom Kolbeins scored 23 seconds into overtime to propel the Victoria Cougars past the Campbell River Storm 3-2 on Friday night.
With the win, Victoria ties the VIJHL Championship Series at one game apiece.
After intercepting a Trevor Bottomley pass, Grayden Hohl took a few strides in before centering the puck over to Kolbeins who ripped it over the shoulder of Chris Smith for the game winning goal.
The two teams were knotted at 1-1 after one period before the Cougars took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Victoria opened the scoring 10:36 in on a goal from Tyler Vanuden. Just over three minutes later, Brett Kinley tied the game with his fifth postseason marker.
Nick Gomerich scored the lone goal of the middle frame at 7:09.
The Storm tied the game at 9:49 of the third period off a deflection from Carter Hikichi.
Goaltender Anthony Ciurro made 26 saves for his league-leading ninth playoff win.
At the other end, Smith stopped 22 shots.
Hohl and Logan Cursley of Campbell River enjoyed multipoint performances, registering two assists each.
Victoria went 0-for-1 on the power play while the Storm finished 0-for-3.
Late in the third period, Gomerich was favouring his right leg and had to be helped off the ice by teammates Branden Tangney and Kyle Wade.
Game 3 goes Sunday afternoon in Victoria.
The announced attendance at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena was 1,085.
The Delta Ice Hawks avoided elimination with a 6-5 overtime win over the Aldergrove Kodiaks in Game 4 of the Pacific Junior Hockey League Championship Series.
In the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League semi-finals, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks beat the Kimberley Dynamiters 5-2 while the Osoyoos Coyotes were upended 3-1 by the Chase Heat.
Beaver Valley and Chase will now face each other in the KIJHL Championship Series.
