PEORIA, Ariz. – Starter Dillon Overton worked six efficient innings and carried the Mariners to a 3-1 Cactus League win over the Texas Rangers in front of 9,549 fans at Peoria Stadium.
Seattle trailed by a run entering the third inning, but caught a break as Mitch Haniger reached base on an error by the third baseman, which was followed by a Mike Zunino single. An out later with runners on second and third, Ben Gamel sliced a ball down the left field line for a double that gave the Mariners the lead for good. Taylor Motter gave the Mariners an insurance run with a solo home run in the sixth inning, his first of the spring.
Haniger extended his hitting streak to eight games and has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games. On the spring, he’s hitting .403 (25×62) with 9 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 10 RBI in 19 games this spring. Zunino has hit safely in three straight and 7 of his last 8 games and is hitting .355 (11×31) with 9 runs, 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 7 RBI in 13 Cactus League games.
Overton made his 6th appearance of the spring, his second start. He allowed just one run, a two-out solo home run in the first inning, before settling down and tossing the final 5.0 innings of his outing without allowing a run. In his last two appearances, both starts, he has allowed just one earned run in 9.0 innings. Overall this spring, he has a 2.65 ERA (5 ER, 17.0 IP) with 13 strikeouts in six games. Relievers Jean Machi, Jonathan Aro and Evan Scribner each retired the side in order in their respective frames.
The Mariners (18-12) return to Cactus League play to face the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow (March 26) at 1:05 p.m. at Goodyear Ballpark. Left-hander Drew Smyly will make his 3rd Cactus League start of the spring for the Mariners against Reds right-hander Rookie Davis.
