March 28, 2017, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Carter Hart stopped all 25 shots that he saw, while teammates Patrick Bajkov and Eetu Tuulola took care of the scoring, as the Everett Silvertips defeated the Victoria Royals 2-0 Tuesday evening in Western Hockey League (WHL) playoff action at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.
The win gives the Silvertips a 2-1 lead in the first round, best-of-seven playoff series between the two teams, with game four scheduled for 7:05 pm Wednesday night in Victoria.
The Silvertips capitalised on a pair of power plays to score both their goals, the first coming just 22 seconds into the second period as Nanaimo, BC native Bajkov – the ‘Tips leading scorer on the season – picked the corner over the blocker of Royals goaltender Griffen Outhouse for his third of the playoffs.
Bajkov added an assist on Everett’s second goal later in the period (at 17:37), when Tuulola deflected his shot past Outhouse for an insurance marker.
The Royals, who much to the chagrin of the 4,790 in attendance, were out-power-played 6-3, did not look good on their power play chances, in one instance in the third period, giving up two breakaways to the ‘Tips while having the man advantage.
The game was a defensive struggle with Canadian Junior team Hart stopping the 25 Royals shots to earn the third star of the game, while Outhouse faced just 21 shots from the Silvertips.
The Royals were without forward Jack Walker and defenceman Scott Walford who were injured in Game 2 in Everett.
Following Wednesday’s fourth game, the team head to Everett for game five on Friday March 31, while game six, if needed, will be back in Victoria at 2:05 pm. Should a seventh game be required, it is scheduled for Tuesday April 4 in Everett.
