The Gunn Baldursson Memorial Women’s Soccer Tournament is held to honour Gunnhildur (Gunn) Baldursson, following the tragic death of the multi-talented Acadia University student athlete in November, 1987. Now recognized as the largest all-women’s soccer tournament in Eastern Canada, “the Gunn” will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2017.
The Valley District Soccer Association (VDSA) is pleased to announce that it will host the Gunn Baldursson Memorial Women’s Soccer Tournament on July 21-23, 2017. Tournament organizers expect upwards of 130 teams using fields in Wolfville, New Minas, Kentville and Port Williams.
“The Gunn Baldursson Memorial Tournament has been and continues to be a major influence in the development of women’s soccer in the Maritimes and beyond,” said VDSA Executive Director and tournament organizer Dwight MacLeod. “Gunn was an honours student, musician, and All-Canadian Soccer player. This tournament recognizes her outstanding citizenship, as well as her love for the game, and continues to inspire new generations of young female players.”
“The Gunn” schedule will support Soccer Nova Scotia’s realignment of age groups and tiers, and will comprise 15 age / skill groups from U-12 through Senior Women.
“Tournaments of this size benefit player development but they also bring significant benefits to our local business community as players, coaches, officials and their families spend the weekend in the Annapolis Valley region,” continued MacLeod
Over the next few weeks the VDSA will be identifying opportunities to welcome corporate support. “Involving local businesses creates a win for local soccer on many levels,” Macleod underscored.
