After opening up their British Columbia Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse season with a 16-4 drubbing of the Nanaimo Timbermen, the Junior A Shamrocks looked as if they were set to match that score in Burnaby. After allowing the first goal of the game, Victoria rattled off five straight tallies between the first and second periods combined. At the halfway point of the game they held on to a 5-2 lead, but then the offense ran dry. Victoria’s Ben Preston scored his third of the period just before the final minute of the middle stanza, but it was sandwiched by a pair of Burnaby Laker goals. The 5-2 had been trimmed to 6-5 in just under fourteen minutes.
Burnaby continued the quick scoring in the third, Mason Pomeroy who scored with four seconds left in the 2nd period, tied the game just nine ticks into the 3rd as well. The Lakers then took their first lead since opening the scoring as Jordan Gabriele lit the lamp just six seconds after Pomeroy’s second. Burnaby fuelled by the quick goals, outshot Victoria 17-9 in the frame, and outscored them 5-0 to walk off with a 10-6 victory.
The Shamrocks had chances to tie the game in the third, as they were awarded a four-minute power play as Burnaby’s Brian Madill was penalized for a check from behind. However, it was Burnaby that struck on the man disadvantage, twice. Goals just two minutes apart, both times down a man, coming from Jesse Gastaldo and Kurtis Shum pushed the Laker lead to three. Pomeroy added one more with eight minutes left for his fourth of the night, part of a six-point game.
Brody Black, Braylon Lumb, and Griffin Wilson scored singles for Victoria while both Jr Shamrocks goaltenders saw action. Will Kinnaird stopped 17/25 while Spencer Erwin entered in relief and stopped 8/10 shots he saw.
The Junior Shamrocks host the Port Coquitlam Saints for their 2017 home opener on Saturday, April 29th at The Q Center. PoCo opens up their 2017 campaign on April 28th vs New Westminster, before visiting Victoria for the second of a back to back.
