Vancouver, BC – April 24, 2017: This past weekend, the BC Rugby High School Girls’ Provincial 7s Championship took place at UBC in Vancouver. Oak Bay High School walked away as repeat champions with a narrow win of 15-10 over Belmont Secondary School.

Day 1 brought four teams to the spotlight, Shawnigan Lake, Cowichan, Belmont and Oak Bay, as all four teams remained undefeated in their respective pools. It became evident early in the day that the Island teams were the favourites to advance to the Cup Round.

On Day 2, McRoberts, Handsworth, Abbotsford and Elgin Park advanced to the Plate competition. Handsworth demonstrated great growth as they finished four places higher than last year. McRoberts put up a tough battle but could not defeat Elgin Park who faced Abbotsford in the Plate Final. Abbotsford were most improved and finished the two-day event as the 2017 Plate Champions.

Lake City, home of Olympic Bronze Medalist Kayla Moleschi, walked away with the Bowl Championship after a hard-fought back and forth match against Yale.

The Championship not only demonstrated the young rugby talent in the province but it also showcased the growth of Rugby in BC. Teams came from as far as Houston, Prince Rupert and Prince George to compete in this Championship. Prince Rupert faced Chatelach in the Shield Championship and came away with the win.

In the second Cup Semi-Final, Cowichan faced Belmont with Belmont having a strong performance from start to finish, ending the game 35-0 over Cowichan.

Shawnigan then faced Cowichan for the 3rd and 4th place finish and defeated Cowichan 24-5.

The Cup final showed tremendous defense and tenacity from Belmont. However, it came to the final few seconds of the game as Oak Bay’s Sophie DeGoede scored securing their win over Belmont, 15-10. Oak Bay walked away victorious as the winners of the BC Rugby High School Girls’ Provincial 7s Championship once again.
