Swift Current, SK – The Swift Current Broncos are proud to announce that forwards Tyler Steenbergen and Aleksi Heponiemi have each won an award at the WHL Awards Luncheon in Calgary, AB on Wednesday.
Tyler Steenbergen – Brad Hornung Trophy – Most Sportsmanlike Player:
Swift Current’s Tyler Steenbergen was recognized as the WHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player for the 2016-17 campaign and was awarded the Brad Hornung Trophy.
A product of Sylvie Lake, AB, Steenbergen finished the regular season with 51 goals, tied for first amongst all WHL skaters. Steenbergen also led the Broncos in points with 90 (51g-39a) while only collecting 22 penalty minutes in 72 games played.
The 5-10, 188lb winger completed his second full season with Swift Current. In 201 career regular season contests with the Broncos, Steenbergen has amassed 147 points (76g-71a) to go along with 53 penalty minutes.
Aleksi Heponiemi – Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy – Rookie of the Year:
Broncos import forward Aleksi Heponiemi was named the recipient of the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Rookie of the Year.
The 5-10, 141 lb forward wrapped up the 2016-17 regular season first in points with 86 (28g-58a) amongst all WHL rookies. Heponiemi’s 58 assists also ranked first in the rookie category and furthermore, 30 of those helpers came on the man advantage which also marked a league best.
The native of Tampere, Finland was drafted by the Broncos in the first round, 10th overall, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft.
