Victoria BC: Some 400 derby fans packed Esquimalt’s Archie Browning Arena Saturday night (May 6th) to witness a high intensity battle between the Eves’ Margarita Villains and Nanaimo’s Harbour City A-Team, The Hydras, which ended in an extremely close three point win for the latter; 141-144 in favour of The Hydras.
Margarita Villains captain, Bettina Slay, who was also named MVP Blocker by the opposing team, says even though her team lost she feels great about the effort they put forth:
“We played well together: in tight, agile walls to hold back their jammers, and executed united offensive plays. There was a fight for every single point, through multiple lead changes; it was intense. We had a huge comeback from the biggest differential all night, down by 46 points, during the last three jams. Our whole bench was on their feet cheering at the end; definitely no hard feelings with a game that exciting!”
Frank’s Red Hot was named the Margarita Villains MVP Jammer; putting up 55 points in the game, 39% of her team’s total. The Hydra’s MVP was Goldie Lex.
The Margarita Villains are now 0-2 on the season; setting their sights on a win in their next game, when they visit Terminal City in July.
Earlier in the night the Eves’ Hard Cores were victorious against Powell River’s Pow!Town Roller Derby team, besting them 219 – 189. Hard Cores Coach Roadhouse Bruise says she is proud of her team for winning their first game of the season:
“They played so well as a team; that really stood out during the game. As the league’s developmental team, they starting playing together very recently, but their hard work, heart, and enthusiasm is so appartenant, and I’m very impressed with that. There’s a lot to learn, but they have the spirit to do it, which is cool”
Natural Disaster was named the game MVP for the Hard Cores while Loose Cannon was given Pow!Town’s MVP nod.
