Prince George,  B.C. –  Exactly two weeks removed from the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, six players from the Cougars 2017 draft class have been invited to attend U-16 Summer Provincial Camps.

Team BC’s camp begins July 11th in Shawnigan Lake and will include forward Tyson Phare and defencemen Brody Gagno, Gabe Shipley and Mathew Magrath.

Tyson Phare (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was chosen by the Cougars in the first round (18th Overall). In 28 games with the Yale Academy he struck for 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points and 56 penalty minutes.

Brody Gagno (Langley, B.C.) was the first defenceman selected by the Cougars in the sixth round (113th Overall). In 29 games with the Yale Academy, he posted two goals and 11 assists for 13 points.

Gabe Shipley (Powell River, B.C.) was chosen later in the sixth round (128th Overall). In 29 games with the Delta Academy he recorded 10 assists.

Mathew Magrath (Prince George, B.C.) was the final defenceman selected by the Cougars in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. The ninth round pick played with the Prince George T1 Bantam Cougars. For the past four seasons he’s also been a part of the Cougars game-day equipment staff.

Later in July (Dates still to be announced), both Stanley Cooley (Regina, SK) and Boston Maxwell (Saskatoon, SK) will be heading to Wilcox, SK for the Saskatchewan U-16 Provincial Camp.

Cooley, a forward, was drafted by the Cougars in the third round (62nd Overall). In 30 games with the Notre Dame Hounds, Cooley potted 18 goals along with 14 assists for 32 points. He also snagged two goals and two assists in seven games with the Notre Dame Hounds Midget AAA team as an under-ager.

In Round 4 (84th Overall) the Cougars went back to the Prairies to select forward Boston Maxwell. Maxwell had 22 goals and 21 assists for 43 points with the Saskatoon Stallions Bantam AA team. Next season he’ll be suiting up for the SMAAAHL’s Saskatoon Contacts.

From each of B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, roughly 20 players will be selected from their respective Provincial Camps to play in the 2017 U-16 Challenge Cup, an annual tournament which takes place in late October in Calgary, AB.
