David Young is a 6-year-old boy from Topsail Pond Paradise. David and his sister Maria attend Topsail Elementary. His parents Steven Young and Melanie Murphy are from Conception Bay South. David is an enthusiastic young man involved with many activities including soccer, karate, Beavers, and music.
He has a particular passion for rugby and is a member of the Rookie Rugby Club, a division of the Baymen Rugby Club in Conception Bay South.
David and his sister Maria came to the Rookie program last year by way of their mother contacting us about some media we had out about our new program.
David and Maria’s energy and enthusiasm had an immediate impact on Damien and I! Always responding, always improving, and eager to do more! And more over are pleasant, happy kids!
Earlier this year, while on a family vacation, David became sick. After some testing the doctors advised the family to return home and David was brought to the Janeway. A few days later, David was diagnosed with Burkitt Leukemia. While this is an aggressive type of cancer, it is very treatable and the prognosis is excellent.
David is a strong young man, but he cannot fight this battle alone!
To date, he has needed several blood and platelet transfusions, and will likely need more.
The family would like to thank all the support that they have received from family, friends, community groups, businesses, his school and the all the doctors, nurses, kitchen and maintenance staff at the Janeway Children’s hospital in St. John’s. They would also like to thank those people who taken the time to donate blood, to David, and people like him, who need it so desperately.
If you want to help, please donate blood to the Canadian Blood Services and support your local children’s hospitals!!
Remember ‘Give Blood, Play Rugby!’
