The boys wore black armbands all week in honour of former Whitecaps FC Residency player Travis Selje.

Whitecaps FC U-15 Residency wrapped up their annual participation in the Canada Soccer U-15 Showcase and identification event on Friday with an impressive 4-2 victory against Toronto FC Academy.

TFC took the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick, put home for a 1-0 advantage. But the ‘Caps responded. After left back Matteo de Brienne created a great opportunity that was thwarted, Arjun Mann later tied the match on 24 minutes with a curling shot into the top corner from outside the box to make it 1-1.

With 12 minutes remaining, Simon Colyn gave the ‘Caps a 2-1 lead following fantastic footwork by Kyle Gomes to set him up with a low cross.

The home TFC side then tied it at 2-2, but again the ‘Caps took the lead. This time it was Damiano Pecile with a superb shot into the top corner from 25 yards out, set up by a powerful run from Yigal Bruk.

With time winding down, Bruk scored one himself after being slipped in by Reese Carlow – Bruk’s third goal of the week. The final whistle signalled a deserved 4-2 victory.

A look back at the previous matches during the week:

Tuesday vs. Canada Soccer selects

On Tuesday the ‘Caps faced a group of select players from across the country who aren’t currently on one of the pro team academy squads. This group included Whitecaps FC Saskatchewan academy player Brandon Miranje, as well as two players from ‘Caps partner league, the BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL).

Chances came and went for the ‘Caps up until the final 20 minutes of the match. After Bruk subbed in, he scored twice in 10 minutes to earn the Blue and White a 2-0 victory.

Thursday vs. FC Edmonton

On a windy day, the ‘Caps faced FC Edmonton Academy in a battle of Western’s Canada’s pro clubs.

With the match nearing the end, Edmonton had a chance on the counter but they were foiled by ‘Caps keeper Chituru Odunze.

Then in the dying seconds, Juvraj Kooner reacted quickest to a ball headed down from Mann to smash it into the back of the net for a 1-0 win.
