It’s almost that time of year again, when the finest young rugby talent from across the province gets together for a fun-filled celebration of our favourite sport. Provincial Regional Championships have always been a high point in the rugby calendar and this year is set to raise the bar even higher. Taking place over 1st-3rd July at Burnaby Lake Rugby Club grounds, the expectations are high as teams battle it out for glory and players hope to catch the attention of representative squad selectors, who will all be attending the event.
BC Rugby is delighted to announce that this year, for the first time, there will be a U14 Girls group to complement the existing age grades, providing equality between genders. It really signifies how much work has gone in to raising the profile of girls’ rugby up and down BC that we have enough players to support this age category. All of the players, coaches, clubs, staff and families who have helped to promote this engagement deserve a well-earned pat on the back.
Such is the demand and the popularity of the event that this year, for the first time, it is being stretched over three days. With around 1000 players expected to attend, the event should be even more action packed than last year, with the U18 boys’ competition also taking place completely over the 3-day weekend.
Events like this require the input from a huge number of individuals, both on the field and off. In order to help us deliver the best experiences for everyone who attends, we are once again reaching out to the BC Rugby community and asking for volunteers to assist overt the weekend. We don’t necessarily need a commitment across all three days, a few hours here and there can make a big difference. Even just a couple hours before play commences each day could be invaluable.
