Mariners Recall LHP Curtis; Option RHP De Jong

DALLAS, Texas – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

 

  • Zac Curtis, LHP, recalled from AA Arkansas.
  • Chase De Jong, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.

 

Curtis (#62) will be in uniform and available for today’s (5:05 p.m. PT) game vs. the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.

 

Curtis, 24, is in his 2nd stint with the Mariners this season, previously appearing in 2 games in relief, May 11-15. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound left-hander, combined to strikeout 1 over 1.2 scoreless innings in relief at Toronto on May 11 (1.0,0,0,0,0,1,HB) and May 12 (0.2,0,0,0,0,0). Curtis, who is 1 of 6 Travelers to be named to the Texas League All-Star team, has spent the majority of the season with AA Arkansas, going 0-2 with 7 saves and a 2.66 ERA (7 ER, 23.2 IP) in 19 relief appearances. He has limited opponents to a .207 (18×87) average, while walking 5 and striking out 27. Curtis is 7-for-9 in save opportunities, ranking T2nd in saves in the Texas League. Dating back to May 9, he is 0-1 with a 4 saves and 1.69 ERA (2 ER, 10.2 IP) in his last 10 Double-A relief appearances.

 

The native of Panama City Beach, FL, Curtis was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the 6th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Middle Tennessee State University. He made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks last season on April 30 vs. Colorado and went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA (10 ER, 13.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and 13 walks in 21 games with Arizona. Curtis was acquired from Arizona along with INF Jean Segura and OF Mitch Haniger in exchange for RHP Taijuan Walker and INF Ketel Marte on Nov. 23, 2016. In parts of 4 minor league seasons with Arizona (2014-16) and Seattle (2017), he has compiled a career record of 7-7 with 56 saves and a 2.09 ERA (29 ER, 125.0 IP) in 114 games.

 

 

De Jong (dee-yong), 23, allowed only 1 hit, walked 2 and struck out 2 over 4.0 scoreless innings in relief on June 15 at Minnesota. In his 4 stints with Seattle this season (4/3-5, 4/21-23, 4/26-5/17 & 6/14-16), he is 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA (20 ER, 28.1 IP) with 13 strikeouts in 7 games including 6 starts. He made his Major League debut on April 5 at Houston, and made his first start on April 30 at Cleveland. With AAA Tacoma, was 2-3 with a 4.32 ERA (16 ER, 33.1 IP) with 34 strikeouts in 6 starts this season. De Jong was acquired by the Mariners from the Dodgers in exchange for INF Drew Jackson and RHP Aneurys Zabala on March 1.
