(Halifax, N.S.) – Dalhousie men’s hockey head coach Chris Donnelly is pleased to announce the commitment of Andrew Shewfelt, Duncan MacIntyre and Reid Murphy to the Tigers 2017-18 lineup.

A 5’10 forward, Andrew Shewfelt joins the Tigers after four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He started his QMJHL career with the Halifax Mooseheads, playing for three seasons before finishing his career with Drummondville Voltigeurs. Shewfelt started the 2016-17 season with the Maritime Hockey League’s (MHL) Amherst Ramblers before joining the Voltigeurs for the second half of the season.

In his four years, the Dartmouth, N.S. native played an average of 58 games per season and earned an average of 23 points.

“I am very happy to be coming to Dalhousie and to be a part of the Tigers community,” says Shewfelt. “I feel Dalhousie is a perfect fit for me and I’m really looking forward to getting started on the ice and in the classroom.”

A two-time Halifax Mooseheads Scholastic Player of the Year, Shewfelt also earned Scholastic Player of the Month honours in each of his four seasons (three with the Mooseheads and one with the Voltigeurs). He is currently enrolled in Dalhousie’s Bachelor of Science program.

“We are very happy to be adding Andrew to our roster,” says Donnelly. “His style of play makes him a perfect fit for our program. He is a hard-working individual who is very quick and possesses a scoring touch in and around the net.”

Fellow QMJHL grad Duncan MacIntyre will also start his university career with the Tigers this fall.

A 6’0 defenceman, MacIntyre got his start with the Quebec Remparts where he stayed for two seasons before joining the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 2014. After 10 games into the 2015-16 season, he headed to the Moncton Wildcats, where he finished his QMJHL career.

A Wildcats captain, MacIntyre played in 284 games, earning 15 goals and 64 assists for 79 total points in his five years.

“I’m excited to attend Dalhousie and play for the Tigers this fall,” says MacIntyre. “I’m very happy to be able to further my education at one of Canada’s best universities.”

A native of Sydney, N.S., MacIntyre is currently enrolled in Dalhousie’s Bachelor of Science program, with a focus on neuroscience.

“We are fortunate to be able to add Duncan’s leadership and talent to our program,” says Donnelly. “He is an intelligent defenceman who possesses offensive skills, which will have a great impact on our power play and help us score more goals in general.”

Joining Shewfelt and MacIntyre in the black and gold is Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) veteran Reid Murphy.

A 6’4 forward, Murphy played five seasons in the CCHL, scoring 38 goals in 211 games, earning a total of 126 points.

He got his start with the Kanata Stallions in the 2012-13 season, before moving on to the Pembroke Lumber Kings (2013-14). After starting the 2014-15 season with the Cumberland Grads, he joined fellow Tigers recruit Jonathan Cyr on the Hawkesbury Hawks roster, where he stayed until the end of the 2015-16 season.

Murphy finished his CCHL career (2016-17) with the Brockville Braves after being traded from the Nepean Raiders midway through the season.

“I am honoured and very excited to continue my career at Dalhousie,” says Murphy. “I couldn’t be happier with this opportunity, both academically and athletically. The experience should be nothing short of amazing and I can’t wait to get started.”

The Stittsville, O.N. native will begin a Bachelor Arts and Social Sciences in September.

“Reid brings a high-level of offensive talent and we look forward to having him join our forward group,” says Donnelly. “He skates extremely well for a big guy and we are eager to work with him as he develops into a premier player in our conference.”

The Tigers finished the 2016-17 regular season with a record of 8-19-3.
