James Linde winning the 200m

COQUITLAM, British Columbia – Trinity Western alum James Linde (Coquitlam) had a night to remember at the Harry Jerome Classic, as he posted personal bests in both the 200m, winning in 20.76, and the 100m, finishing second only to Canadian Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse in 10.42 Wednesday at Percy Perry Stadium. Fellow Spartans alum Nathan George (Coquitlam) also earned top prize in his race, notching a season’s best time of 46.33 to win the 400m.

Racing in a familiar environment – Linde trains with the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track & Field Club at Percy Perry Stadium – Linde got the party started early when he won the 200m in impressive fashion, bettering his previous personal record of 20.85.

Just over an hour and a half later, Linde lined up against a pair of recent Olympic medallists in De Grasse and Akeem Haynes, who won a bronze medal with Canada in Rio in the 4x100m, and once again proved his speed, beating Haynes and coming across the line just behind De Grasse. The Canadian superstar won the race in 10.17.

“I like to up my game when I’m up against the best and that was the best person in the world to push me today,” Linde said after the 100m race. “I was seeded (fifth), so to pop in a second place, that’s huge. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

George, who is the reigning Canadian champion in the 400m, bested the field by more than a second as he ran away with a convincing victory.
