Highlanders Fall 4-1 To Sounders U-23, Focus Shifts To Juan de Fuca Plate

Victoria Highlanders FC (3W-0D-8L) suffered a 4-1 defeat to Seattle Sounders U-23 (6W-1D-5L), July 7 at Sunset Stadium in the first of two matches in three days.

Edward Na, Troy Peterson, Derek Johnson and Ryan Schaefer scored for the Sounders, while an own goal got the visiting Victoria side on the board.

After an own goal late in opened half tied the match 1-1 at the break, Sounders U-23 were able to take advantage with three goals in the second stanza. Highlanders goalkeeper Simon Norgrove was assessed two yellow cards in the match, leading to an automatic ejection.

The team’s focus now shifts to Sunday, where they will welcome provincial rival TSS Rovers for a 2:00 p.m. kick-off at Centennial Stadium.

Sunday’s match will determine the winner of the 2017 Juan de Fuca Plate, the supporter-driven competition awarded to the top PDL club in British Columbia. TSS holds the advantage on aggregate entering Sunday’s fixture, with supporters from both clubs adding to what is expected to be a terrific atmosphere. Victoria was the last club to hoist the Plate, after defeating Vancouver Whitecaps in 2014.
