July 16th, 2017 Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Blazers claimed their third straight Victoria Senior Lacrosse League Championship title with a 10-6 win over the Victoria Tugmen Thursday evening at the Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt.
The Blazers, regular season champions, came into the final posting an undefeated, 16-0 record primed to battle the a resilient Victoria Tugmen team that bested the number two and three seeded teams in playoff season action to advance to the final after finishing fourth through the 16 game regular season.
True to form, the Blazers would jump out to a first period 3-1 lead that would be extended to a 7-1, unanswered tally half way though the second. The Tugmen would find some pace late in the second frame to begin what would be a comeback attempt, chipping away at the Blazers lead scoring three quick, unanswered goals to pull to within three of knotting the score 7-4.
Scoring early in the third, the Blazers would attempt to tilt favour back in their direction but strong offensive plays in front of the Blazer’s net would continue to pay dividends for the Tugmen, adding another two goals to their total to inch closer with time running against the gritty Tugmen.
The Blazer’s, digging deep, would hold back the Tugmen’s challenge, scoring two final times, one on an empty net goal to claim the championship cup with a 10-6 final.
