VICTORIA – It was a day of medals for University of Victoria rowers at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Man. Vikes athletes helped contribute to five rowing medals today, Aug. 3, including a gold for the Vikes duo of Elise McCracken and Avalon Wasteneys.
McCracken and Wasteneys, who were both part of the Vikes novice program, finished first in the women’s pair in a time of 8:01.01 being the first to top the podium for Rowing BC. McKenna Simpsonwas a part of the silver-medal winning women’s quad team that trailed Ontario with a time of 7:05.48.
Stand out Emma Gray, of Manitoba, helped her team finish in third in the women’s quad (7:06.49). McCracken, Wasteneys and Simpson will also prepare to race the eights final on Friday, while Simpson is also gearing up for the double. Gray will race in the eights final for Manitoba.
Other Vikes included Sarah Craven who finished fourth with Saskatchewan in the women’s quad. Craven will also race the lightweight double, the double and eights. Hannah Meeson of Nova Scotia and her women’s quad crew finished sixth overall but Meeson will also be racing the lightweight doubles.
On the men’s side, Ty Adams won silver for BC in the men’s single in a time of 7:34.62, while the BC men’s light four of Chris Clarke, Seb Gulka, Chris Gulka, Ellis Hollands finished second in a time of 6:40.59.
Also golden on the day was incoming women’s cross-country and track athlete Desirae Ridenour, whose Team BC female relay team won gold in triathlon. Ridenour won gold in the individual event earlier in the week.
