VICTORIA, BC – Monday, August 7, 2017 – A week of solid performances on the water in Trakai, Lithuania yielded a bronze medal at the World Rowing Junior Championships from Kieanna Stephens and Grace VandenBroek in the women’s double sculls. The men’s four of Fraser Darling, Neil Kennedy, Peter Lancashire and Dylan Rupnow, who raced earlier on Sunday, finished third in the B Final.

Amanda Caromicoli, Alexandra Wright, Emma Reinsch and Leila Ashtaryeh of the women’s four placed second in C Final, narrowly edged out of first by .71 seconds by Switzerland.

With a quick start by South Africa, Stephens and VandenBroek made their move to catch up at the 500 metre mark, gaining the lead. Canada was challenged in the second half of the race by Great Britain and Germany. The women’s double slipped into third and held on to the final podium spot through to the finish line, winning a medal in their first World Juniors.

“It was a very hard race, we came out fast,” said VandenBroek. “We knew we had to hold on and we had a really good chance for a spot on the podium. We both still have a year of juniors left, so we knew it was going to be very challenging, but we just laid it all out there.”

The men’s four faced strong competition in the B Final with Chile and South Africa taking early leads in the race. Canada moved their way up throughout the race from sixth to third as South Africa and Chile fell behind. The four were 3.93 seconds behind first place Denmark, finishing ninth overall.

The women’s four raced on Saturday in the C Final, finishing second and 14th overall. In a tight battle over the first 500 metres between the top three finishers, Canada and Switzerland pulled away from Ukraine as the Canadian crew pushed Switzerland for the first-place position.
