The Intermediate ‘A’ Shamrocks won gold at the Provincials in Langley over the
August 4-7 weekend. It was a very competitive tournament as the Rocks found
their way into the gold medal game by a tiny margin in a tie-breaker as 3 teams
finished with 2-1 records.
The Rocks started the tournament against Langley and, despite being ahead 12-9
at 1 point, ended up winning by a single goal, 15-13 in overtime. Game 2 saw
them take on the league-leading Maple Ridge Burrards, another 1-goal game won
by the Shamrocks 10-9. A win in game 3, against Coquitlam would give the
Shamrocks first place but they fell 9-6.
Maple Ridge, Coquitlam and Victoria all finished the round robin portion with 2-1
records. Tthe tie-breaker was goals for and against. Maple Ridge had 31 goals for
and 21 against, giving them top spot. Victoria’s record was 31-32 and Coquitlam
was 27-29 so by a 1-goal difference the Shamrocks went on to the gold medal
game while Coquitlam played Langley for Bronze.
The gold medal game was very close and low-scoring with Victoria trailing 5-4 after
two periods but rebounding for a 7-6 victory in regulation time.
Thomas Vaesen of the Shamrocks was named the tournament MVP while two
Shamrocks were named to the Provincial All Star Team: Goaltender Ryan Atkinson
and Forward Jackson Boyd. A very good finish to a very good season by the team.
