Kamloops, BC—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer team plays their first set of exhibition matches this week.
The WolfPack leave today (Aug 9) for Calgary and four matches as part of a tournament being hosted by the Mount Royal University Cougars.
TRU will open up against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves tomorrow (Aug 10).
John Antulov and company have been only working out for about a week but due to the smoky conditions from the Cariboo forest fires, they only had one outside workout.
“The group has looked solid though,” says Antulov. “They have come in fit, prepared and mentally focused which is great to see from a coaches perspective.”
Antulov admits they will be at a bit of a disadvantage since that one outside workout was the only one on a regulation size pitch. “We haven’t had much time to work on tactical play or 11 v 11 but we will use these upcoming matches in Calgary to do that.”
The WolfPack bench boss says the objective is clear for this tournament. “We are going to use these matches for development and the guys getting to know each other. We will also be using these matches to work on different tactical formation and shape. Everyone will get in. But we won’t have seven players this week due to various reasons.”
Some of those missing include two time Canada West all-star Ryan Glanville (Williams Lake, BC), veterans Alan Connor (Kamloops, BC) and Brendan Mendez (Calgary, AB) along with highly touted rookie Anatoli Leveille (Winnipeg, MB) who played for Manitoba last week at the Canada Summer Games.
The WolfPack will meet the MacEwan University Griffins on Friday (Aug 11), followed by the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday (Aug 12) and wind up Sunday(Aug 13) against the host school.
The team will switch suitcases and then go to Oregon for exhibition matches Aug 17-22nd. Their Canada West season opener is Friday, August 25th in Prince George, BC against the Timberwolves.
The ‘Pack’s home opener is Saturday, September 2nd at Hillside Stadium when the University of Victoria Vikes come to town. It’s a 2 pm start time.
