Victoria, BC: It came down to the game’s final seconds, but the Eves of Destruction A-Team clinched the win against visiting American team Camaro Harem at Archie Browning Arena on Saturday (Aug. 12).

The Eves’ travelling team trailed closely for most of the game against their Washington state rivals from the league Jet City Rollergirls. But quick work by the A-Team’s jammers brought the crowd to its feet and pushed the home team ahead in the final seconds. Final score: 123-114.

In the final minutes of the game, jammer Tina F. Lawless won lead after Camaro Harem’s point scorer went to the penalty box. Lawless passed the jammer helmet cover to her pivot, Roadhouse Bruise, who broke through a wall of opposing blockers and squeaked the A-Team ahead by one point.

The next A-Team jammer, the Wife of Wrath, took to the track in the closing seconds, winning lead jammer and earning points before passing the helmet cover to Frank’s Red Hot, who sealed the win.

The Wife of Wrath was awarded MVP Blocker, while the A-Team’s title of MVP Jammer went to Hot-Piece-of-Sass. Zombie HuntHer was named MVP for Camaro Harem.

Hot-Piece-of-Sass says the win topped off strong performances for the A-Team this year, with a record of four wins and two losses.

“We were relentlessly chasing Camaro Harem down the whole game,” she says. “They kept a slight lead but we were able to keep the pressure on and turn the game around in the final minutes.”

“It was an awesome way to end the A-Team’s season.”

Earlier in the night, the league’s development team, the Hard Cores, defeated local rival, Brass Knuckle Derby Dames from Duncan, by a score of 173-126. The Hard Cores finished their season on a high note, after a record of five wins and one loss over the season.

The Hard Cores team featured four new rookies—Daddy Stronglegs, Fat-Bottomed Hurls, Crashberry Beret and Herma Jess T.—and Montreal Roller Derby transfer skater Dark Knight, who won MVP Jammer. Natural Disaster was selected as MVP Blocker for the third time this season, while Hot Box was chosen as MVP for the Brass Knuckle Derby Dames.

Kreeper Sutherland, co-captain of the Hard Cores, says the league’s training programs, called Raw Meat and Fresh Meat, have developed some talented skaters.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the work the team has put in both on and off the track,” she says. “We had skaters participate in their first ever game and you would never have been able to tell.”
