Where Should Zeke Be Drafted?

Ezekiel Elliott

Ezekiel Elliott took the NFL by storm in his rookie season rushing for over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the Cowboys to a division championship and playoff berth. Zeke was a lock to become a top 3 fantasy football pick this year until the announcement of his 6-game suspension. This leaves the biggest question mark of the fantasy football season… what round should Elliott be drafted in?

Ezekiel Elliott is challenging his suspension. The NFL has until the end of August to shorten or keep the suspension. Let’s assume Elliott will miss 7 total weeks of action during his suspension (counting the BYE week too). That means depending on your league format, Elliott will miss at least half of your fantasy football season. Ouch!

Now there are plenty of arguments already out there declaring Elliott will be fresh and healthy down the fantasy football playoff stretch with this current suspension. I make the argument that it might already be too late for your team to rebound if you wasted an early round pick on the suspended Elliott.

Depending on the draft format I have seen Zeke go as early as a second round draft pick. There are other mock drafts that have him going as late as the fifth round. Coming from a guy who won with Zeke last year as an early round draft pick, I think that would be a major mistake this season. Unless you feel confident in picking up a late round running back sleeper or a valuable running back off of the waiver wire, which is always easier said than done.

It does not matter if the draft is standard or PPR, Elliott should be drafted no earlier than the third round, and no later than the fourth round. If you are drafting wide receiver heavy in the first few rounds this season, the third or fourth round would be ideal for you to pick up a quality RB1 with off-the-field baggage such as Elliott. The only true question is will he still be available? My guess, is somebody takes a reach on him in the second round. Elliott can be the one draft pick this season that can win or lose your league.
